OSHA has issued a health warning for all individuals who work in the hair salon industry.  Recent investigations have uncovered that several popular hair smoothing and straightening products contain formaldehyde.  Air tests conducted have shown levels at higher rates than allowed for salons.  In some cases, tests were positive for formaldehyde even with product labels claiming to be formaldehyde-free.

Exposure to formaldehyde can irritate the nose and eyes; cause allergic reactions to the skin and other parts of the body; and have been linked to cancers such as nose and lung.  “Workers have the right to know the risks associated with the chemicals with which they work, and how to protect themselves,” said federal OSHA Assistant Secretary Dr. David Michaels. “Employers need to know these risks in order to ensure the safety and health of their employees.”  To read the entire news release, please click here and you will be taken to the United States Department of Labor webpage.
